“Writing for Her Life” For Women’s History month, we’ll look at Lydia Maria Child (1802-1880), who was one of the first American women to earn a living by writing. An anti-slavery activist as well as a champion of women’s rights and Native American causes, Child was sister to a Unitarian minister, but often dissatisfied with the Unitarianism of her day, though she seemed to find a home with the Free Religious Association. - ERS

On April 4, 2007, dozens of fires were burning in the southern portions of the U.S. Midwest. Marked with red dots in this image from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer modis.gsfc.nasa.gov (MODIS) on NASA's aqua.nasa.gov Aqua satellite, the fires are scattered across Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. Winds are blowing nearly due south, stretching smoke plumes from several of the fires. Though much of the landscape has ''greened up'' with the arrival of spring, higher...

Purple shadows hang in the lee of the peaks, giving the snow-clad land a crumpled appearance.
